Most Common In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) Tests in India

IVD – In Vitro Diagnostic tests are the tests which are examinations conducted in a medical laboratory on samples which are retrieved from human body. The exact meaning of “In Vitro” is “A process taking place on Glass Tube or Dish.” These tests are non-invasive and mostly performed in a professional healthcare setting. These tests are used to assess the overall health condition of a person, early detection of a disease condition, prevent spread of diseases as well as to improve patient care and health management. 


Some of the most common in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests in India generally fall under routine screening as well as diagnosis and management of prevalent infectious and non-communicable diseases. The examples of the same are;


Complete Blood Count (CBC): A test that provides complete picture of Blood Cells and used to assess overall health, detect infections, anaemia, and cancerous conditions.  
 

Blood Glucose / HbA1c: India has very large population suffering from Diabetes. These tests are performed routinely to detect diabetes and to monitor long term Glycaemic control which is essential for preventing post diabetic complications. 


Urine Analysis: Used to screen for metabolic and kidney disorders, as well as urinary tract infections.
 

Lipid Profile: Measures levels of Lipids like Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL, LDL etc. These are mostly used as predictors for occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. 
Liver Function Test (LFT) & Renal Function Test (RFT): Measures various enzymes, Proteins, Electrolytes and waste products and there by providing useful hints about the health of most important body organs like Liver and Kidney. 


Thyroids & Fertility Hormones: Estimating the levels of Thyroid Hormones like T3, T4, TSH as well as Fertility Hormones like FSH, LH, Prolactin etc. By these tests the hormone regulation functions in body are assessed and there by trying to understand health issues related with hormone functions. 


Infectious Diseases: Infectious disease burden in India is very big. Infections like Malaria, Typhoid, Hepatitis, TB are very common across the country. Tests like Widal, Rapid Tests for these infections or other methods like ELISA, CLIA etc are frequently employed for diagnosing these conditions. 


Pregnancy Test: Again, a very common Test performed in healthcare set up as well as also as Home Tests in many parts of country. 
Almost 70 to 75% of the IVD testing done in various Laboratory set ups are comprising of these Common IVD Testing in India.
